A Look at the Past
The grounds of the Seventh and Eight Series have seen two prior National Opens and produced the 1979 and 1983 National Champions, FC-AFC McGuffy, owned and handled by Debby and T.J. Lindbloom and handled by T.J. and FC-AFC Trieven Butch of Big Jake, owned by Gloria and Joe Boatright and handled by Joe.
An active competitor in the trial game, Joe was also the co-owner of the magnificent Boatright-Goodrich Ranch in Oakdale, CA, on which no fewer than five National Open Championships have been held as well as numerous weekend trials. Many in our sport have competed on the wonderful grounds at the Ranch over the years.
Debby and T.J. are here at the Eight Series today. They report it was a sentimental journey for them to come to these grounds because this National is the 40th anniversary of their dog McGuffy's National win.
McGuffy was an amazing dog with an impressive record. His story has been told in the "Retrievers of the Past" series published by Retriever News, authored by the News contributing writer Joule Charney. Never one to slow down, T.J. is working this trial as a member of the Thrower's Committee and has been throwing today's long retired bird in the Eight Series.
An active competitor in the trial game, Joe was also the co-owner of the magnificent Boatright-Goodrich Ranch in Oakdale, CA, on which no fewer than five National Open Championships have been held as well as numerous weekend trials. UPDATE - Traffic Alert - I-5 Closed 8 Miles North of Corning
We
are advised that a truck fire has produced a traffic jam affecting both
directions of Interstate 5 about 8 miles north of Corning. Traffic on
the interstate is stopped at this time and a detour using surface
streets has been established.

A Thank You to Today's Landowners
The
7th and 8th Series are being held on the "Lassen Investment Property,"
an 80-acre property specially developed for retriever training. The
Lassen Investment Property was set up by its original owner and avid
trialer, Peter Lane, for shared ownership by seven retriever
enthusiasts. Peter owned the lumber mill that used to operate next door;
the ponds on this property were originally used for storing logs before
being repurposed and remodeled as Pete's training ponds. The seven
shares have turned over from time to time and are now owned by Dick
Ellis (one of the original owners), Jerry Patopea, Diane Morley, Don
Graves, Chris Hatch, Steve Cote and Marilyn Dahlheim.
A BIG THANK YOU to these owners for their generous invitation to hold a portion of the 2019 National Open here.

A National event is the largest individual stake, the most prestigious event any Field Trial Retriever, Owner and Handler could be a part of. It is the best of the best in the Retriever Field Trial world. The National Retriever Club has brought to you this competition for seventy nine years. They have crowned seventy eight champions, and Saturday will crown their seventy ninth. As proven in this National, more accurately in this 8th Series, it is a very rigorous and challenging competition to become a National Field Champion. Mt. Lassen
Mt. Lassen
With less haze today these trial grounds have a good view of 10,457-foot Lassen Peak, also known as Mt. Lassen. This majestic peak lies east of the trial grounds and is the southernmost active volcano in the Cascade Range. This highly volcanic range extends from British Columbia all the way into Northern California and includes nearly 20 active volcanoes, seven of which have erupted within the last 200 years(!). Mt. Lassen itself was most recently active in a series of eruptions lasting from 1914 through 1921. The 1915 eruption was very explosive and is reported to have thrown volcanic boulders measuring 3 feet across that landed as far away as Reno, NV.
Mt. Lassen lies within Lassen Volcanic National Park, a 106,000+ acre National Park that has a large variety of fascinating volcanic features and is a great choice for a visit while you are in the area. You can drive to within a 2-1/2 miles of the Lassen summit at 8,500 feet and take a trail to the very summit for a short day hike. The views are amazing.

Recap - Still Early in the 8th Series Water Quad – Can You Handle It?
Retrieving a
retired island bird in front of a flyer can be a tough challenge and this test
is no exception. With nine dogs having run we have seen 5 handles on this bird
alone, 3 pick ups, and only one clean job.
Dogs sent for
this bird and missing the need to check down for the island can end up
perilously close to the flyer guns and need a handle, or else work their way to
the long retired bird and then need a handle on the short bird. The dogs that
commit to hunt the area of the retired guns can show us that – where island
birds are concerned – the saying "Find the bird boy find the bird"
does not necessarily apply. The many pieces of water and tall cover that dot
this test area make handling to the island bird far from easy.

Day 6 - Thursday, November 14 - GOOD MORNING
Good Morning to you all and welcome to day 6 of the 2019 National Retriever Club Championship. Today we are in Anderson California to run our 7th Series! We are about a 48 minute drive from where we were yesterday!
Yesterday we finished the Fifth and Sixth series leaving us today with 53 dogs starting the 7th Series! A big cut came after the challenging 5th Series Land Quad with Two Flyers and Three Retire, that dropped 23 dogs.
We didn't have far to move for the 6th Series, which was a 245 yard Land Blind with the mat sitting only about 20 yards from fifth series mat. The line for sixth test pretty much went through three of the four station of the fifth series.
We will be starting with #74 Doyle with handler Ryan Brasseaux.
As always the judges and the grounds crew are getting right to kick off our 7th Series. We will be bringing you the test description along with pictures, the sketch from Missy Bell and drone shot by Rich Pingatore!

Directions to the 7th Series in Anderson CA
This is a 48-minute drive from the location of the 6th Series. If you use a navigation app you can put in the street address 4506 Panorama Point Road which takes you to the next door property. The trial site itself has no house number but is one parcel south of 4506 Panorama Point on the same side of the road.
DIRECTIONS:
Take I-5 north. If you are entering at the Casino on-ramp (Liberal Ave.) you will go 36 miles north on I-5, expect 2 or 3 miles less from the hotel on-ramps.
Take exit 664 for "Gas Point Rd."
At the end of the off ramp, go right onto Fourth Street. Go 0.8 mi.
Turn left onto Balls Ferry Road. After 0.9 miles Balls Ferry Road will make a jog. Follow the jog by taking a right then a left to stay on Balls Ferry Road.
Go another 0.7 miles to a "Y" where you keep to your left to proceed onto Panorama Point Road. (Balls Ferry Road heads off to the right - don't go there.)
Proceed another 1.3 miles and see the Trial site on your right.
Of course there will be NRC signs along the way.

Brad Henman, the owner of Clear Creek Sports Club describes what it took to prepare this property and get it ready for the 2019 National Retriever Championship.
Running Order - 6th Series
Please noticed that some dogs maybe running out of order during this test.
This is a fast pace test and with handlers running multiple dogs, we may run into spacing issue and/or time issues with the handlers having to switch out dogs and not having enough time to get back to the line in the order they should be.

The Professional Retriever Trainers Association
Over three quarters of the professional trainers who are handling dogs at the 2019 National Open are members of the Professional Retriever Trainers Association (PRTA). The PRTA represents approximately 100 professional trainers nationwide and its membership includes field trial, hunting test and gun dog trainers. Over half the dogs that are entered in this National (66 out of 101) are being handled by PRTA members!
As one would expect, the PRTA and its members are very active in the field trial game. The organization through the hard work of its members puts on 8 field trials a year; these trials are distributed across all four time zones. PRTA members have also previously contributed to Retriever News by supplying professional training guidance that has appeared in the News' "Ask The Pro" column.
The net revenue from the PRTA field trial program goes back to the retriever community in the form of PRTA financial support for the improvement of retriever grounds across the US. Four grants are normally awarded each year. The winning projects are selected by the PRTA membership at the association's annual meeting which is held at each National Open - including this one - and normally has about 50 PRTA members in attendance.
The PRTA is soliciting grant applications at this time for the grants to be awarded in 2020. If you have an idea for improving the grounds your club uses for its weekend trials and hunt tests the PRTA encourages you to apply for a PRTA grounds improvement grant. More information and the grant application forms will eventually be available at the PRTA website: www.prta.net. In the meantime, member and PRTA Secretary Marcy Wright is the person to contact regarding a grant application.

Reminder Of The 5th Series - Test Description
5th Series
The first bird, Left Flyer Station, is a Rooster Pheasant Flyer at approximately 230 yards from the mat. The gunners face left and shoot the rooster out to the left. This bird lands in heavy, dry straw-like cover. The gunners then retire.
The second station, Left Middle Station, is 190 yards from the line. These gunners throw a hen pheasant right angled back. The bird lands in a group of moguls with patches of cover. These gunners also retire.
The third station, Right Middle Station, is 270 yards from the line. these gunners throw a hen pheasant to the left. They then retire behind a clump of trees.
The fourth and final station is the Right Flyer Station, which is a hen pheasant flyer at approximately 110 yards from the line. The gunners sit on a small mound and shoot out of the test to the right. They are the only stand out guns of this test. This test is taking between eight and ten minutes to complete.
