Flyer - Good Flyer

Long Retired - Line wide left of the fall area. Hope took a right out of one of the water structures and put a hunt along a shoreline short of the bird. She expanded her hunt pattern and located her bird.

Right Retired - Line took her through the water structures but arrived wide left of the mark, then Hope went deep. She was handled to her bird.


Short Retired - Line brought her into the area a little right. She continued to drive but was handled back to the bird.

When you look up the definition of a Field Trial, “competition” or “compete” are two word(s) you are going read. The unique factor in a Field Trial is that it is not just a person, the team consists of an animal and a human – dog and handler – a man and his best friend. Two brains working together to complete a series of tests, which brings a whole new dynamic to the word “competition.”

A National event is the largest individual stake, the most prestigious event any Field Trial Retriever, Owner and Handler could be a part of. It is the best of the best in the Retriever Field Trial world. The National Retriever Club has brought to you this competition for seventy nine years. They have crowned seventy eight champions, and Saturday will crown their seventy ninth. As proven in this National, more accurately in this 8th Series, it is a very rigorous and challenging competition to become a National Field Champion. A title that only 78 dogs in the history of this sport have. Soon to be 79. Good Luck to the teams that have made it!

Mt. Lassen

Mt. Lassen

With less haze today these trial grounds have a good view of 10,457-foot Lassen Peak, also known as Mt. Lassen. This majestic peak lies east of the trial grounds and is the southernmost active volcano in the Cascade Range. This highly volcanic range extends from British Columbia all the way into Northern California and includes nearly 20 active volcanoes, seven of which have erupted within the last 200 years(!). Mt. Lassen itself was most recently active in a series of eruptions lasting from 1914 through 1921. The 1915 eruption was very explosive and is reported to have thrown volcanic boulders measuring 3 feet across that landed as far away as Reno, NV.

Mt. Lassen lies within Lassen Volcanic National Park, a 106,000+ acre National Park that has a large variety of fascinating volcanic features and is a great choice for a visit while you are in the area. You can drive to within a 2-1/2 miles of the Lassen summit at 8,500 feet and take a trail to the very summit for a short day hike. The views are amazing.

Flyer - Nice Line

Right Retired - Good line with a brief loop near the shore then Gamble went straight across to the bird.

Short Retired - He got a whiff of drag back as he headed across towards his bird. He quickly moved on and nailed this bird.

Long Retired - Going under the arc, he got just deep, making one loop just outside the cover and he got it.

***Gun Change*** Day 2 - 8th Series

Our gun change came at 10:21 am, after dog # 56 completed his test.

We started our day at 7:14 am with dog #34. He have completed 3 hours 7 minutes and 12 dogs. Our test is currently  averaging 15.5 minutes per dog.

For day two of the 8th Series, it is as follows...

Handle - 3
Double Handle - 2
Pick Up - 2

This means we have only had 5 dogs compete this test today without a handle or pick up!

The sun is out and our current temperature is at 3 mph which is forecast to increase mid afternoon to 6 mph.

We will be back with dog #60 after this gun change.

Flyer -Right line out and came in from the gunners side then went straight to the bird.

Right Retired - A loop and scoop! Never slowed down - just grab, turn and back.

Short Retired - Came in right of the short bird and had to hunt left. He worked his way to get his bird.

Long Retired - Scrapper got out to the area just right of the brush pile. He went in and out of the pile expanding his hunt but he went back every time until he got the bird.

Pick Up - 53. FC LOUISIANA BLACK MAGIC SPELL, "Hex" LM, Tim Milligan

Right Retired - Hex hit all three pieces of water and came out on top of his bird.

Short Retired - Excellent line to the island but he missed his bird. Heading deep a quick whistle brought him back.

Long Retired -  Going way deep left, had problems and the gunners stepped out. Picked up.

Right Retired - Missed the bird on the left and kept going. Maddie swam to the next piece of land and hunted. She swam back towards the high tension line tower and found her bird.

Short Retired - Nice line towards the bird. Getting onto the island, she got just past it but turned back around and got it.

Long Retired - Excellent line under the arc of the bird. She turned right into the cover and got her bird on the second quick pass.

Long Retired - Out across the field an the left hand angle. Mystic went wide left down to the area. She crossed the road left of the retired guns, came back to the right of the road, found the guns and the correct brush pile but missed it and got very deep and had to be handled back to her bird.
