The Professional Retriever Trainers Association
Over three quarters of the professional trainers who are handling dogs at the 2019 National Open are members of the Professional Retriever Trainers Association (PRTA). The PRTA represents approximately 100 professional trainers nationwide and its membership includes field trial, hunting test and gun dog trainers. Over half the dogs that are entered in this National (66 out of 101) are being handled by PRTA members!
As one would expect, the PRTA and its members are very active in the field trial game. The organization through the hard work of its members puts on 8 field trials a year; these trials are distributed across all four time zones. PRTA members have also previously contributed to Retriever News by supplying professional training guidance that has appeared in the News' "Ask The Pro" column.
The net revenue from the PRTA field trial program goes back to the retriever community in the form of PRTA financial support for the improvement of retriever grounds across the US. Four grants are normally awarded each year. The winning projects are selected by the PRTA membership at the association's annual meeting which is held at each National Open - including this one - and normally has about 50 PRTA members in attendance.
The PRTA is soliciting grant applications at this time for the grants to be awarded in 2020. If you have an idea for improving the grounds your club uses for its weekend trials and hunt tests the PRTA encourages you to apply for a PRTA grounds improvement grant. More information and the grant application forms will eventually be available at the PRTA website: www.prta.net. In the meantime, member and PRTA Secretary Marcy Wright is the person to contact regarding a grant application.

6th Series - Land Blind
Series Six is on the same field that was used for the Fifth Series. The mat will be down the road about 20 yards. It will angle across the marks and run parallel to the left hand flyer.
The line will drop into the field from the mat on the road. It cuts through the small stream of water clipping off the right hen flyer station, crossing through the line of the right middle bird, crossing to the left of where the left middle bird gunners stood and then continuing 245 yards in a line parallel to the left flyer station to a planted rooster pheasant.
The hen flyer crates remain stacked at the gunner locations where the hen pheasant was shot in Test Five. There is cluster of dark clumps of vegetation on the line. The darker cover is behind the area where the left gunners stood.
The line will drop into the field from the mat on the road. It cuts through the small stream of water clipping off the right hen flyer station, crossing through the line of the right middle bird, crossing to the left of where the left middle bird gunners stood and then continuing 245 yards in a line parallel to the left flyer station to a planted rooster pheasant.

We started Series 5 on Tuesday, November 12 at 7:09 am with dog #31. We finished the first day of testing with dog #99 at 4:40 pm. Today, our second day of this test started with dog #94 at 7:03 am.
Between the two days it took 14 hours 7 minutes for 81 dogs to complete this series. That is approximately 10.5 minutes per dog.

The wind has picked up giving the Left Flyer (Rooster Gunners) a challenge and the hen flyers (Right Flyer) are turning right when they are being thrown! The wind is coming in from the north. That is direction the roosters are being thrown and a cross wind for the hens.

Recap – Fifth Series – Day Two
After having run about 65 dogs on the 5th Series, we are looking at a total of 14 handles and 4 pick-ups, 28% of the dogs run so far. It appears that the most common reason for a handle being called for is over-running and hunting too deep. There is a lot of field beyond these four birds! We have also seen handles needed to prevent a switch.
The preferred retrieval order has shifted since we reported yesterday morning after 30 dogs had run. By the end of yesterday's testing we were seeing a majority of the teams sending for the left hand retired flyer as their next bird after recovering the left retired bird, rather than picking up the two tight converging birds as a pair and sending for the long flyer on the left after retrieving everything else. One reason for this could be that as the first bird down, the retired flyer is watched well by the dogs and hence remembered well, whereas the throw of the second bird of the converging pair can be nearly overlooked by dogs who expect the right-hand flyer to be the final bird of a triple. It's also close and ... a flyer!
We have also seen a few dogs retrieve the right retired bird, despite it being the longer bird of the converging pair, before they retrieve the shorter converging bird. It is possible this was not the handler's plan and just the result you can get when there are two birds in close proximity to each other.

Reminder Of The 5th Series - Test Description
5th Series
The first bird, Left Flyer Station, is a Rooster Pheasant Flyer at approximately 230 yards from the mat. The gunners face left and shoot the rooster out to the left. This bird lands in heavy, dry straw-like cover. The gunners then retire.
The second station, Left Middle Station, is 190 yards from the line. These gunners throw a hen pheasant right angled back. The bird lands in a group of moguls with patches of cover. These gunners also retire.
The third station, Right Middle Station, is 270 yards from the line. these gunners throw a hen pheasant to the left. They then retire behind a clump of trees.
The fourth and final station is the Right Flyer Station, which is a hen pheasant flyer at approximately 110 yards from the line. The gunners sit on a small mound and shoot out of the test to the right. They are the only stand out guns of this test. This test is taking between eight and ten minutes to complete.

We back here at the 5th Series Land Quad with 3 Retire and 2 Flyers!
We will be starting with Dog #94 that was in the holding blind for their rerun when we finished our day yesterday! Next will be #96 (rerun from yesterday) and then #2.
Our morning is starting at 48 degrees with a high in the mid 70's. We have a slight WNW wind at 3 mph.
We will completed the 27 dogs that have yet to complete this series today! We are looking at approximately 5 hours of running dogs to finish the 5th Series IF things continue to run as they did yesterday.
